Red Jacket
Scilly Isles gigs are light, fast rowing vessels originally used off the rocky coast of Cornwall to ferry pilots out to incoming sailing vessels. In 21st century America these vessels, built with modern construction methods and materials, are giving rise to rowing as a popular community sport. More than 25 exist on America's east coast, including six in the Penobscot Bay region.

Core Cell Foam is a relatively new material and technique in boat building. It has a high strength to weight ratio, won't soak up water, and can't rot. More than half the boats currently being built in the United States are built of foam. The Marine Tech class of the Mid-Coast School of Technology is building the Red Jacket out of this state of the art material, preparing them to join generations of Mainers in our boat building heritage.

The Red Jacket, a clipper ship built in Rockland in 1854, sailed the fastest time ever recorded from New York City to Liverpool, England, 13 days, 1 hour, 25 minutes. We honor the memory of Rockland's famous ship in our gig, the Red Jacket.
